Description
Introduction
This module aims to structure and professionalise procurement negotiation practices.
It provides concrete methods for preparing and conducting effective negotiations.
Participants will learn to defend their interests while building lasting agreements and strengthening the impact of negotiations beyond the sole consideration on the quoted price alone.
This module is part of the programme Building Procurement Excellence: A 5-Step Development Framework.
Objectives
Upon completion of this module, participants will be able to:
Prepare a negotiation in a methodical and strategic manner.
Adapt the approach according to the context and stakeholders.
Use effective persuasion and communication techniques.
Negotiate total value by integrating different levers.
Secure agreements and contribute to reliable contracting.
Programme
Moving from an intuitive approach to a mastered methodology (that goes beyond a sole focus on the quoted price alone) and securing the relationship.
Adapting the strategy to different types of exchanges and identifying the context (bilateral, auction, group, face-to-face, remote, individual or group).
Strategically preparing the exchange: defining goals (target, acceptable, walk-away), the Zone of Possible Agreement (ZOPA) and the Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement (BATNA).
Mastering persuasion levers and conducting the negotiation: Using integrative negotiation (Win-Win), the principles of persuasion (Cialdini) and managing difficult situations with the DESC assertive communication tool.
Negotiating total value beyond the quoted price: Using trade-off levers (guaranteed volumes, firm lead times, payment terms) and holding parties accountable through KPIs, service levels (SLA) and penalties.
Securing the agreement through written formalisation by systematically confirming oral agreements (meeting minutes) to avoid any loss of information between discussions and the contract.
Moving from agreement to contracting and mastering contract anatomy and types: Understanding the specifics of contracts (framework, service, purchase order) and the essential protective clauses (liabilities, termination, confidentiality, etc.).
Target audience
This training is aimed at anyone involved in procurement (purchasing) as part of their role, whether as a professional buyer or as a non-buyer responsible for managing service providers and suppliers. It is particularly suited to:
Procurement professionals at the beginning of their careers (junior buyers, category buyers, project buyers, contract managers, procurement officers),
HR, Finance, IT, and Operations teams, often directly involved in high-value procurement (e.g. recruitment agencies, payroll tools, IT services, external services),
Project managers, managers, assistants and technicians involved in sourcing suppliers, comparing offers, negotiating and contracting, who wish to acquire concrete tools.
